Historical events during which all liquid water on the surface of the Earth was frozen, the so-called snowball Earth (Kirschvink 1992; Hoffman et al. 1998), have occurred
at least three times, i.e., 2.43, 0.717, and 0.650 Gyr ago (Hoffman 2019).
