The VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey

• The Imaging survey and the Spectroscopic survey over sixteen square degrees of the sky in four separate fields.

The deep imaging is to obtain UBVRI over 16 deg^2 and K' imaging over selected areas, with the CFHT, ESO-NTT and ESO-2.2m.

The VLT VIMOS and NIRMOS will allow to measure redshifts from magnitude selected samples of galaxies picked from the imaging survey.

• A sample of 100,000 redshifts for sources up to AB = 22.5.

Once a complete magnitude limited sample has been observed with a spectral resolution R~250

a sub-sample will be observed at R~2500-5000 to avoid any bias.

• A sample of 50,000 redshifts for objects up to AB = 24
• A sample of 1,000 redshifts for objects up to AB = 26
